Accurate spelling is a huge focus in this Curriculum and a major part of weekly Homework; we are dedicating more lesson time at school to further support the children’s abilities, to boost their confidence in employing a wide vocabulary in their writing and to extend their knowledge of the English language.

For your reference, you will find a copy of the Year 5 & 6 Spelling Appendix, from the 2014 Curriculum, in your child’s Homework Book. The words in the Appendix are in addition to the spelling rule words specific to your child’s year group. You will also find copies of successful strategies, employed at school, to aid children with learning spellings, any further support you can give children at home would be of fantastic support to them.

Homework: Spelling homework will be set on a Tuesday and expected back, completed to a good standard, by the following Monday at the latest. Homework not handed in on Monday, may not be marked until the following week.

The written homework will comprise work related to weekly spellings. There may also be occasional further tasks or additions for consolidation or extension / and or topic related work.

Maths homework will be set every week with individualised activities to complete on as well as weekly practice of x tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. The expectation for all children is that they will know times tables up to the 12 x.

Each student has a personal log in for both of these websites. If any child is unable to access these at home they may attend homework club and use a school laptop.

Reading: Children should bring their Reading Records to school every day and should be reading at least 20 minutes every single day. Please try to find the time to listen to them read. Notes from adults reading with your child at school will be recorded in the Reading Records in addition to comments from the Teacher-led weekly Guided Reading sessions.

PE: Badgers will need full PE kit in school all week every week for their sessions on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Please ensure children have kit that fits (especially non-slip shoes, ideally trainers) and this needs to include shorts and a t-shirt for warmer days/indoor sessions, plus warm layers for cooler outside sessions. It is imperative children use their own kit rather than relying on borrowing as this can not only be disruptive for other classes but personal hygiene must be taken into consideration.

If your child wears earrings to school, they must be able to remove and replace them themselves or not wear them to school on a PE day please and these should only be gold studs. If they have newly pierced ears, your child must provide and use their own earring tape to cover them during the session.

In addition to PE clothing, children must bring in their coats during the Autumn and Winter term. It would be much appreciated if all items of clothing has your child’s initials or names on them to ensure that if indeed they are misplaced then can be quickly returned to their owner.

Water: Children need a bottle of water (not squash) every day to be kept in the classroom, this should be separate to their lunch drink and clearly named. Children will be able to refill their bottle from the taps in the classroom. Children will be reminded to take these home daily to be washed.
